Macmillan’s Pocket American and English Classics

A uniform series of classic titles published by Macmillan and “edited for use in elementary and secondary schools, with critical introductions, notes, etc.,” in the latter 19th and early 20th centuries. A subset of several of the works of Shakespeare was also issued as part of the pocket classics, entitled “The Tudor Shakespeare.” A separate checklist for this subset is in preparation.

Books are more or less uniformly bound in brown cloth with varying decoration. Early copies had an ornate design printed on the cover, later copies just the title stamped within a simple box. The books are 16mo., approximately 5 5/8″ tall.

Most titles went into several printings, normally indicated on the copyright page. Dates given in this checklist are for the earliest known date of publication. Reprints with different editors are listed separately.

A later series entitled “The New Pocket Classics” was issued by Macmillan in the 1920s and 30s. These had a slightly larger format. A checklist of these titles is in preparation.
